Our recommendation to replace James Ramos as SBC Supervisor: Chris Carrillo

Updated: Dec 7, 2018

Chris Carrillo with Robin Kobaly of the SummerTree Institute.

Now that James Ramos has been elected to represent California's 40th Assembly District, leaving his position as representative for the Third District on the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors vacant, a replacement is being sought to finish the remaining two years of Ramos' term. Applications for Ramos' seat on the board are being accepted until 2 p.m. on Monday, December 3.

Interviews for the Third District Supervisor position will be held in public at 10 a.m., Tuesday, December 11, at the County Government Center, 385 N. Arrowhead Avenue, San Bernardino.

We recommend and support Chris Carrillo for the Third District Supervisor position, to serve out the remaining two years of Ramos' term. Carrillo, an attorney and political consultant who is highly qualified and has served as both the former Deputy Chief of Staff to a Third District Supervisor, and as Senior Field Representative for Senator Dianne Feinstein. He has been greatly involved in the community, and knows Third District and San Bernardino County issues well enough to immediately be effective in the position.

Third District residents especially are encouraged to submit letters of support for Carrillo's appointment to the Board of Supervisors prior to the December 11 public interviews. A sample letter that may be copied, pasted, and modified, is below.

San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors

San Bernardino, CA 92415 San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors:

I am a resident of the Third District of San Bernardino County. I write to the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors today to offer my strong support for Chris Carrillo for the Third District Board of Supervisors appointment.

You have an important decision to make as to who will best represent the constituents of the Third District. We deserve a Supervisor who knows our community and knows our issues. We desire a candidate who will hit the ground running and provide strong representation for the Third District constituency. Mr. Carrillo’s long standing work in San Bernardino County, at the federal, county and local level, particularly, his work for the former Third District County Supervisor, makes him the best candidate for this appointment.

Mr. Carrillo has been an advocate for the Third District community for over a decade. When small businesses were facing frivolous ADA lawsuits, Mr. Carrillo stood up for the small business community, which led to the Governor signing legislation supporting our local businesses. When the solar industry looked to site large scale industrial projects in our rural communities, Mr. Carrillo worked with the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors to develop a renewable energy ordinance enhancing protection for our desert communities.

He saw a need to support our nonprofits and helped lead the effort for Give BIG, which has raised $1.5 million to our county nonprofits in need. As Chairman of the East Valley Water District Board of Directors, he has helped lead the Board to break ground on the Sterling Natural Resource Center, a $150 million facility in the East Valley promoting recycling water and replenishing our dry aquifers. Mr. Carrillo has been actively involved with relevant community issues ranging from homelessness, a Vacation Home Rental Ordinance, OHV issues, including BLM's Western Mojave “WEMO” Plan, to tourism-related issues at Joshua Tree National Park, a Dark Sky Ordinance, and numerous other issues.

Mr. Carrillo is well known throughout the Third District and respected by community leaders whom he has worked side by side with for over a decade. He is accessible, hard-working and balanced in his decision making. He prides himself in being nonpartisan, independent and open-minded which are important qualities for a nonpartisan seat such as this one. He has also given back to his community in many ways, including volunteering his time on several boards and attorney coaching our local Redlands and Citrus Valley High School Mock Trial students.

Mr. Carrillo is well qualified to serve as Third District Supervisor, as an attorney, political consultant, former Deputy Chief of Staff to a Third District County Supervisor, and Senior Field Representative to Senator Dianne Feinstein. The decision before you is an important one for San Bernardino County and the constituents of the Third District. Mr. Carrillo is the best candidate for this appointment. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Your Name
